8 Largest Cruise Ships

While bigger isn’t always better, I definitely prefer to go on one of the largest ships in the world because everything is on a grander scale. Larger ships have more activities, more things to do, more dining options, and more fun! So here’s my countdown to the world’s largest cruise ships:

Saunas, Turkish bath, solarium, relaxation room, thalassotherapy, massage room, whirlpool – guests may make use of all facilities in a relaxing and pleasant environment. For those seeking more sporty activities, there is a sun-kissed exercise room suspended above water. 7. -tie- MSC Fantasia (MSC Cruises) -2008- For the very first time on a ship, guests can walk on Swarovski crystal stairs (wow, knowing how expensive a Swarovski phone case is, I can only imagine what this must have cost them!). A transparent ceiling allows passengers to experience all the magic of sailing as they gaze at the starlit skies. With 27,000 m2 of public space, including the luxury spa, 5 restaurants, 4 swimming pools, 12 hydro-massage pools, coffee bars, shops, a children’s area, a Formula 1 simulator and an interactive 4-D cinema, you can truly rediscover yourself as you relax into your holiday. Top 10 Cruise Destinations

While cruises are known for their outstanding dining options, peaceful time by the pool, sunbathing, and all their onboard activities, I actually consider the cruise port stops to be the most enjoyable element of the overall experience.

So once you decide which cruise line is best for you, take a look at my 10 favorite cruise destinations:

10. The Galápagos Islands – See giant tortoises, seal lions, penguins, fur seals, marine iguanas in a place that Charles Darwin visited to observe the unique wildlife.

9. The Panama Canal - See the ruins throughout this man made wonder.

8. Hawaii - This luscious getaway is very expensive to visit but totally worth it.

7. Australia - See the Sydney Opera House, the kangaroos, and all the natural wonders this destination has to offer.

6. Mexico - It can be rather frightening to tour Mexico on your own – not just because of the violence and crazy driving, but mainly because such few people speak english. That’s why I recommend stopping at the best ports from your cruise.

5. Asia - See a world unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the USA.

4. Alaska - It is considered to be one of those places that everyone should visit once in their lifetime. While the weather is icy cold, it’s unlike anywhere you’ve ever been before and the wildlife is unlike any where else in the world. Be sure to go whale watching and hiking.

3. Antarctica - See penguins in their natural habitat, glaciers and icebergs. While it is very pricey, I think it is well worth it. Be aware that you “must” go between October and February because cruise ships do not operate from March to September because it is the Antarctica winter.

2. Europe - What better way to see Europe than an action packed cruise? Go shopping, take in the culture, and peek into the past.

1. The Bahamas – Out of all the exotic destinations mentioned, the Bahamas are still #1 on my list, especially for those living in the Western Hemisphere. I think everyone should take their first cruise, or at least one cruise throughout their lifetime, to the beautiful Bahamas. Why? The weather is always nice, the beaches are beautiful, Cape Canaveral is just an hour outside of Orlando, making a cruise a great addition to your Orlando theme park filled  vacation. Remember that June to early December is the Hurricane threat period so you may not want to go in that time period.

If you’re going to see the Bahamas then you must book a cruise that stops at Nassau, which is home to Atlantis Paradise Island. Atlantis is a luxury beach side resort that has its own aquarium, water park, and much more. Many celebrities have stayed here, it’s a must see for anyone.

So what’s your favorite cruise destination? Is the Caribbean really the best place for first time cruisers? I’d love to hear from you in the comments! As always, let me know if you need any help with planning your next vacation.

CityCenter Las Vegas

This urban, ultra hip and modern, 76 acre mixed-use complex is unlike any where else in the country. It has helped Vegas truely become a world class destination, making Vegas my second favorite vacation destination in the country, coming in right after Orlando.

So what exactly is CityCenter? It’s a 16,797,000-square-foot, six building city within a city. As if Vegas wasn’t cool enough without it, they built this complex literally right in the center of the strip, between the Bellagio and Monte Carlo Las Vegas, and right across the street from the Planet Hollywood hotel (which used to be called the Aladdin). You can navigate the city by foot or get from one area to another by taking the complimentary (free to everyone, regardless of where you are staying) CityCenter Tram, a monoraiI, that stops at Monte Carlo Las Vegas, Crystals, Aria and the Bellagio. I would love to live there one day, you can rent a condo at Veer Towers starting at around $1300. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before and I would love to live next door to gourmet top notch restaurants, entertaining and shopping that’s all located within walking distance from my condo/apartment. Their Crystals mall has to be the nicest, most beautiful mall in the country. If you haven’t visited Vegas since December 16, 2009 (the day it opened) then you need to start planning your next trip to sin city.

CityCenter was built at a cost of 9.2 BILLION (the original estimate was $4 billion), making it the largest privately financed development in the USA. This site was formerly occupied by the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, which first opened in 1968. You will find five water and ice features throughout the property; they were designed by the same people who brought you the Bellagio fountains and the Mirage volcano. The six main buildings include:

Hotels

    • Aria Resort & Casino is by far the largest and most popular hotel in the complex. This 600 foot high, 61 story building consists of 4,004 hotel rooms. It features a 150,000 sq ft casino.

  • Vdara rises 57 stories making it the second tallest building in the complex, followedmy Mandarin Oriental at 56 stories. This hotel-condo tower
  • Mandarin Oriental – Rising 539 feet (56 stories) this luxury hotel consists of 392 hotel rooms and 225 condos.
  • Harmon Hotel – This gorgeous 27 story building was originally intended to be a 49 story non-gaming boutique hotel but the hotel never actually opened to the public – and never will due to construction defects. Plans are currently underway to demolish the hotel but ongoing litigations seem to be delaying the process.

*(Fun fact: Fontainebleau Resort Las Vegas is another example of a Vegas hotel that never opened. Built at a cost of 1.7 billion, this 63 story building was supposed to open in 2009 but never did, due to bankruptcy and a bad economy. Now it sits empty and unused but it remains the tallest building in town. My opinion: This UGLY building is located on the other side of town near the Circus Circus. It’s a complete eye sore in a bad location that should have never been built in thee first place.)

*Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is technically NOT apart of CityCenter but it was opened just a year later than the CityCenter complex and it is located right beside CityCenter (if you didn’t know you would assume it was part of CityCenter so I am going to include it on this page). This hotel is partnered with Marriott and Ritz Carlton. We absolutely lover their Wicked Spoon Buffet. While it was a little pricey, it is well worth it. The “Cosmo” is the sixth and seventh tallest building in Vegas, followed by the Aria at 8th tallest (see Wikipedia list of tallest buildings in Las Vegas).

Mall

    • The Crystals is located right in the center of CityCenter, featuring high end stores like Gucci, Tom Ford, Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, and Prada. This 500,000 sq. ft retail and entertainment district is a must see regardless of whether or not you plan on shopping or dining here.

Condos

    • Veer Towers
    • Mandarin Oriental

Every Timeshare Is A Ripoff

Yes, I really believe that. After dealing with my parents timeshare, sitting in on a few sales pitches and doing some research I have come to a reasonable conclusion – that I will NEVER buy a time share. Here is the cold hard reality of the downsides of owning a timeshare:

  • Many timeshares only allow you to stay in a selection of specified hotels and of course the nicer ones are going to be filled up a year or two in advance. Then (this is how ours works) if you want to stay somewhere other than the seven hotels in their chain you have to pay an additional $250. Our Orlando timeshare works out where it would be much cheaper, more convenient and carefree to simply stay at one of the Disney Resorts.
  • Many timeshare weeks evaporate into thin air two years after they have been purchased, if you have not used it by then (even after you PAID FOR IT!)
  • They are a pain to have to deal with! With a certain amount of points, certain hotels that cost more, deadlines, paper work, etc… they are a hassle just to deal with, taking the fun out of vacationing
  • They are nearly impossible to get your money back out of, especially in todays economy. They are very hard to sell, usually your best bet is to sell it back to the company you bought it from at a fraction of the amount you paid for it. My parents spent $10,000 on their timeshare back in 1993 and I can’t even get $3000 for it today (I posted an ad on Craigslist for $3000 and didn’t get one single decent response, just spam) and If you are planning on buying a timeshare then you should definitely get a “used” timeshare and not buy it from the money steelers themselves.
  • Many people don’t even use the kitchen and extra space and amenities that their timeshare includes

The rooftop pool at the Polo Towers timeshare

We recently stayed at the Polo Towers in Las Vegas and told the concierge that we wanted to see the Beatles LOVE show at the Mirage. But she told us that she could give us  a $25 deal, for two people, where we could see another Beatles show (instead) and get a meal at one of three restaurants at the Planet Hollywood. We ended up eating at the Planet Hollywood’s Spice Market Buffet, which we really weren’t very impressed with (especially after eating at the Cosmopolitan’s delicious Wicked Spoon buffet the day before). And we ended up seeing Vegas! The Show instead of the Beatles show, which was a fantastic show, I would see it again in a heartbeat. …but getting the show and meal for two for $25 came with a catch, we had to spend an hour and a half or so listening to a sales pitch.

They were trying to sale us a 96,000 timeshare with monthly fees and weeks that expire. I just sat there quietly imagining how that 96K could be invested, instead, and paying people plenty of interest money to stay at the nicest hotels on the strip. The sales guy claimed that he had met all the celebrities and they he had been the casino manager at one time or another at all of the nicest hotels on the strip. We got the impression that he tooted his own horn a little to much, especially after he went into the talk about how he could be retired right now but that he is a timeshare salesman just because it gives him something to do.

Get rid of the timeshare and you can stay at what ever hotel you like, when ever you like.

Then when I asked him about the best way to sell a timeshare, he said – sell it back to the company (for a reduced rate of course).

So is it just me or are timeshares a complete ripoff? I’m sure they work great for many people but they definitely aren’t right for me. Timeshare owners, I would especially love to hear from you. Feel free to comment!
